TV and radio presenter Azeezah Hashim says the petition to have TikTok banned in Kenya is not good news since the platform is key income avenues for many youths in country, herself included.

The 23-year-old, who makes an average of Sh20,000 whenever she goes live on TikTok, has termed the petition in Parliament as a misplacement of priorities.

“In a country where we have a lot going on like corruption and high cost of living, I think we are misplacing our priorities,” Azeezah said.

She however acknowledged that there is need to moderate content on TikTok.

“I have a baby brother and it’s gotten to a point I don’t want him to be logged in to TikTok because of the things he is going to encounter,” Azeezah said.

“I think we should focus more on regulation rather than banning the application because there are a lot of content creators who are earning a lot from TikTok. I go on TikTok live and earn crazy money and yet I’m not a top content creator. I wouldn’t want my source of income banned,” she explained.

With the nation divided on whether the App should be banned or not and the petition still in parliament, President William Ruto last week met TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew to discuss the issue.

The social media App has been blamed for promoting violence, explicit sexual content, hate speech, vulgar language and offensive behavior with its inability to moderate the content questioned by the public and Members of Parliament.
