A resident of Tamkal Village in Kolowa Sub-County, Baringo County, has voluntarily handed over an illegal firearm to the police.

In a statement by the National Police Service (NPS) on Sunday, September 21, 2025, the AK-47 rifle, which was surrendered with a magazine and two rounds of ammunition, was received by the Sub-County security team in the presence of members of the local Peace Committee. It has since been placed in secure custody at Kolowa Police Station.

Authorities said such gestures help strengthen peace and security while preventing the misuse of weapons in armed conflict and crime.

Local Peace Committees have been working closely with residents to encourage voluntary disarmament. The latest handover shows the growing willingness of communities to cooperate with security agencies in fostering lasting peace.

Police have urged members of the public to continue sharing information and supporting initiatives aimed at disarmament. They noted that every illegal firearm taken out of circulation reduces the risk of violence and insecurity in Baringo and beyond.

This comes after Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen recently announced a two-week amnesty period, urging people in possession of illegal firearms to turn them in to the nearest police station or security post, to avoid prosecution.

Murkomen also said that those who surrender their firearms will be given opportunities instead of punishment. He offered scholarships, technical and vocational training, and even participation in government affordable housing programs to those who lay down their arms voluntarily.

The Interior CS warned that those who refuse to surrender weapons will face forceful disarmament and stricter security operations.
