A boda boda rider has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for r*ping and assaulting his customer in Dagoretti, Nairobi.

The accused, Erick Mburu Gathoni, appeared before a Kibera court on Thursday where he was jailed for 15 years for r*pe, and three more years for assault; the sentences are to run concurrently.

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), led by Violet Ombati, presented six witnesses against the accused during the trial.

“The victim narrated that she took a boda boda ride to a friend’s place and half way the trip, the accused slowed down near a forest where he took a knife, threatened and beat her up,” the ODPP said in a statement.

The victim was rescued after she discreetly texted her sister, who with the help of other boda boda riders, rushed to the scene and found the Mburu in the act.

The accused is said to have attempted to escape but was pounced on by his fellow boda boda riders.
