A boda boda rider who allegedly robbed a businessman of two mobile phones in Tena estate in Nairobi’s Eastlands area has been charged in court.
John Ngumbu Kanyi is facing charges of robbing Jacob Onyango of the two mobile phones worth Sh75,500 on July 1, 2023.
On that day, Mr Onyango was returning home from a nearby pub where he had gone to meet a friend when he met Mr Kanyi half a kilometer from the entrance into his house.
The accused person allegedly confronted the complainant demanding payment, while falsely pretending he had offered him transport services before robbing him of his phones.
Mr Kanyi allegedly sped off on a motorcycle after the robbery but My Onyango’s neighbour, who is listed as a witness in the case, identified the bike before it disappeared.
Police later traced the owner of the motorcycle after the matter was reported at Buruburu Police Station and he helped officers arrest the rider.
Mr Kanyi denied the charges before Senior Principal Magistrate Monica Kivuti of the Makadara Law Courts. He was released on a bond of Sh100,000 and an alternative cash bail of Sh50,000.
The case will be mentioned on September 19 before hearing starts on January 25 next year.
Mr Kanyi was charged a month after a 19-year-old boda boda rider who allegedly accosted and robbed three people at gunpoint along Safari Park Road in Kasarani, Nairobi, was denied bail and bonds and remanded in custody.
Ali Abdi was charged with three counts of robbery with violence for allegedly robbing Faith Wambui, David Muchungu and Francis Mungai of their mobile phones and cash at about 11pm on 24 May.
His case is still pending at the Makadara Law Courts where he was charged on June 6, 2023.
