In a recent development following a trend set by church leaders, politicians accompanying President William Ruto during a church service in Bomet were not given the opportunity to speak.
Ruto was in Sotik for the official opening and dedication of the newly completed Chebango AGC church. Governor Hillary Barchok, who hosted the president, was also affected by this decision
. The elected leaders in attendance included Senator Hillary Sigei, Dagoreti South MP John Kiarie, Mwangi Kiunjuri (Laikipia East), Francis Sigei (Sotik), Brighton Yegon (Sotik), and JSC Commissioner Isaac Rutto. Roads Cabinet Secretary nominee Davis Chirchir, who actively supported the church’s construction, was also present. Bishop Robert Langat, who led the service, only acknowledged their presence and invited Ruto to speak.
“Our leaders who are here today please stand wherever you are…we are grateful that you came,” he said.
“Tunawapenda sana waheshimiwa wetu, mungu awabariki,” he said.
While speaking, Ruto said they have agreed to respect the church as a holy place of worship.
“Kanisa ni mahali patakatifu tutaheshimu na maneno yale mengine ya kisiasa tutafanya nje ndiyo tuweke heshima kwa kanisa vile inavyofaa,” he said.
This is translated to mean, “the church is a holy place and we will give it the respect it deserves, we will take our politics outside the church in that respect.”
