The Cabinet has honoured the late marathon world record-holder Kelvin Kiptum was who was killed in a car crash on Sunday.
According to State House spokesperson Hussein Mohamed, the Cabinet in a meeting chaired by President William Ruto held a minute of silence in remembrance of the late Kiptum and his Rwandan coach Gervais Hakizimana.
“Cabinet meeting underway at State House Nairobi, with President William Ruto leading Cabinet secretaries in honoring the late marathon world record holder Kelvin Kiptum and his coach, Gervais Hakizimana, by observing a one-minute silence,” said Mohamed in a statement X.
24-year-old Kiptum was driving from Kaptagat to Eldoret in the Rift Valley when his car careered off the road and hit a tree.
He burst onto the marathon scene when he ran a world record 2:00:35 in Chicago in October, slicing 34 seconds off Kipchoge’s previous record.
He was just 23 at the time, and competing in only his third marathon.
Kiptum also won his other two efforts — his debut in Valencia in 2022 and a follow-up in London the following year — recording three of the seven fastest marathon times in history.
