Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has admitted that the team could not cope against Newcastle United in Sunday’s Carabao Cup final.

In a week where the Reds were eliminated from the Champions League, they also missed the chance to secure the first silverware of the season.

Dan Burn and Alexander Isak scored either side of half-time to give Eddie Howe’s side the lead.

Federico Chiesa’s stoppage-time goal was merely a consolation, as Newcastle won a trophy for the first time in 70 years.

“Under Eddie Howe, Newcastle have been a physical team, but they saved their best for today,” Carragher said on Sky Sports.

“It wasn’t a great football match, but a lot of that was probably down to Newcastle’s game plan. There is a lack of pace in Liverpool’s front three.

“It’s not their day—this is all about Newcastle. In terms of set-pieces, duels in midfield, and pace, Liverpool simply couldn’t cope.”
