TikTok has responded to a cyber-attack that targeted multiple brands and celebrities, stating that only a “very limited” number of accounts were affected. Owned by Chinese company ByteDance, the video-sharing app is collaborating with users to regain access to their compromised accounts.
However, TikTok did not disclose specifics regarding the perpetrators of the attack or the method employed. Among the affected accounts was that of news outlet CNN.
“We have been collaborating closely with CNN to restore account access and implement enhanced security measures to safeguard their account moving forward,” a TikTok spokesperson said.
“We are dedicated to maintaining the integrity of the platform and will continue to monitor for any further inauthentic activity.”
CNN did not immediately respond to a BBC request for comment.
TikTok disclosed that the account of reality TV personality Paris Hilton was targeted in the cyber-attack, although it remained uncompromised. With over 10 million followers, Hilton is an active user of the platform. These developments occur amidst ongoing scrutiny facing TikTok in the US, where it faces a potential ban unless divested by its Chinese parent company.
Despite its vast global user base, TikTok has encountered concerns regarding data security and its ties to the Chinese government. Additionally, the platform has become a notable arena for political discourse, particularly in the context of US elections. Former President Donald Trump recently joined TikTok, despite previously attempting to ban it over national security concerns.
Trump, now with over five million followers, stated his intention to utilize the platform to communicate directly with the American populace. In contrast, President Joe Biden has also embraced TikTok as a campaigning tool for the upcoming November election, albeit with a significantly smaller follower count of approximately 350,000 compared to his political opponent.
