Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairperson Wafula Chebukati had a cancerous brain tumor that was recurrent.

His family on Monday told the press that when he was diagnosed with the tumor, he was taken to Germany where he underwent a surgery to remove it.

The family spokesperson detailed that in April 2024, it was discovered that the tumor had recurred and he went back to Germany for a second removal.

Chebukati would again go back to hospital in December 2024, after a check-up showed that the tumor had recurred.

Come 2025, Chebukati was re-admitted in hospital on February 12, where he was placed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). He suffered a cardiac arrest on February 20, 2025.

“At no time was the immediate family called upon and informed he was clinically dead,” the spokesperson said dispelling social media reports.

The family will now conduct a post-mortem examination on his body awaiting his burial slated for March 8, 2025 at his Kitale home.
