Chelsea have once again caused quite the stir in the summer transfer window.
The Blues smashed the British transfer record on Monday when they announced the signing of Moises Caicedo for a fee understood to be around £115million. The Ecuador international, who was the subject of one of the most remarkable transfer sagas of recent times, has signed an eight-year contract at the west London club, with the option of a further 12 months.
Caicedo becomes the latest in a long line of Chelsea players to sign such a long contract at the club. Ever since Todd Boehly took over at Stamford Bridge, the American and his team have utilised signing players to a mega-long-term contract in order to get around some of the restrictions Financial Fair Play (FFP) puts on clubs.
With that said, football.london takes a look at each and every player in the Chelsea first-team squad and reviews their contract situation. From those who are signed until 2031, to those who have less than 12 months remaining on their deals…
Expiring: 2024
Lucas Bergstrom, Thiago Silva, Ian Maatsen, Callum Hudson-Odoi
What happens next: Lucas Bergstrom, 20, looks unlikely to extend his stay at Chelsea beyond June 2024. The Finnish goalkeeper spent the first half of last season on loan at League One side Peterborough United. This season, he is yet to be sent out on loan but that could happen in the remaining stages of the transfer window.
Thiago Silva, ever since he has been at Chelsea, has worked on a yearly basis. At 38 years old, Silva is taking each season as it comes. The Brazilian defender showed on Sunday, though, that there is still plenty left in the tank, so an extension could be a possibility once again.
Meanwhile, Ian Maatsen has interest from West Ham United, football.london understands. However, the Dutchman has proved his worth somewhat to Mauricio Pochettino in recent weeks while playing in numerous different positions, so he would definitely be a useful one to have around the squad.
Callum Hudson-Odoi wants to leave Chelsea this summer and has already told the club of his desire to do just that. The Blues will not stand in the 22-year-old’s way and football.london was told this week that a permanent move to Fulham is edging closer after positive talks between the two clubs.
Expiring: 2025
Malang Sarr, Conor Gallagher, Hakim Ziyech, Mason Burstow
What happens next: Chelsea are open to offers for Malang Sarr and there is interest from France in his signature. Sarr spent last season on loan at AS Monaco, but the Ligue 1 outfit decided not to make the deal permanent this summer.
Conor Gallagher, meanwhile, could still leave the club before the transfer window closes. The England international is open to leaving the club and the Blues would sell if the right offer came their way – with the midfielder being valued in excess of £40million.
Hakim Ziyech is likely to leave Chelsea on a permanent basis before the conclusion of the summer transfer window. Things have gone quiet regarding the Moroccan in recent weeks, but football.london understands Chelsea are working with Ziyech’s camp behind the scenes to try and find the winger a new club.
Expiring: 2026
Marcus Bettinelli, Lewis Hall, Romelu Lukaku
What happens next: We are still awaiting official confirmation that Lewis Hall has signed a new contract extension at Chelsea. That deal is expected to run until 2030 and would see him loaned to Crystal Palace for the season.
Marcus Bettinelli recently penned a new deal at Chelsea, with the 31-year-old more than happy to be a back-up option at Stamford Bridge. Romelu Lukaku, meanwhile, is still on the search for a new club, with Juventus interested in the striker.
Expiring: 2027
Ben Chilwell, Raheem Sterling
What happens next: Ben Chilwell looks set to be at Chelsea for the foreseeable future. The England left-back was recently appointed as the club’s new vice-captain and still has four years left to run on his contract.
Raheem Sterling, though, faces a more uncertain future. The Jamaican-born England international has not lived up to the heights expected after signing from Manchester City in the summer of 2022 and faces a big season at the Bridge.
Expiring: 2028
Trevoh Chalobah, Marc Cucurella, Reece James, Carney Chukwuemeka, Armando Broja
What happens next: There are still plenty of rumours floating about regarding Trevoh Chalobah and his future at the club. football.london understands Chalobah would be open at starting a new chapter in his career away from west London. Chelsea would be open to offloading the 24-year-old should suitable terms come their way.
Marc Cucurella, also, faces an uncertain future. Chelsea would sell the Spaniard for the right price after a slow start to life at Chelsea after signing for big money last summer.
Expiring: 2029
Wesley Fofana, Levi Colwill, Axel Disasi, Christopher Nkunku
What happens next: Wesley Fofana was signed last summer and has impressed when he hasn’t been injured. Levi Colwill recently put pen-to-paper on a new long-term contract extension at the club, so will not be going anywhere anytime soon.
Likewise with Axel Disasi and Christopher Nkunku. The French pair have both been brought to Stamford Bridge this summer and look to have exciting futures in west London.
Expiring: 2030
Robert Sanchez, Benoît Badiashile, Malo Gusto, Andrey Santos, Lesley Ugochukwu, Noni Madueke
What happens next: All of these players were either brought in over the January transfer window or this summer. Chelsea have made major investments in young players as they look to shape their future.
Expiring: 2031
Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo, Mykhailo Mudryk, Nicolas Jackson
What happens next: Three massive-money investments in Enzo Fernandez, Caicedo and Mykhailo Mudryk – who are all seen as pillars in Chelsea’s ambitious plans. While Nicolas Jackson has started life at Stamford Bridge in tremendous style.
