The Siaya County government on Thursday confirmed one case of Cholera reported in Rarieda sub-county.

The County’s Executive Committee Member (CECM) for health Dr. Martin Odhiambo K’Onyango said the case has been identified in Uyoma at Manyuanda health center.

He told Citizen Digital that the case was confirmed on Thursday morning after the samples of a patient who had been rushed to the facility for treatment three days ago with Cholera-like symptoms were tested.

“It is true that we have had one confirmed case of Cholera in Siaya County. This case has been identified in Uyoma, and the health facility is handling it,” said the CECM.

“The patient was received three days ago and had all the symptoms of Cholera and we took the specimens, this morning we got the confirmation.”

Dr. K’Onyango stated that the county health personnel are already on the ground to closely monitor the situation to prevent further spread of the bacterial disease.

He stated that patient was treated and is now stable, adding therefore that there should be no cause for alarm.

The CECM further stated all county surveillance teams have already been dispatched to do follow up and contact tracing to ensure that the deadly disease does not spread.

“This is our first case of Cholera confirmed, it is not new in our region…some other counties already have cases. The most important thing is that the patient has been managed, we have all the necessary commodities on the ground,” he stated.

“There is no cause for alarm because our surveillance team has already been dispatched to the ground tracing all the contacts and doing the necessary follow up.”

Dr. K’Onyango however also called on Siaya residents to now take all the necessary precaution to prevent more cases in the county.
