A 15-year-old girl in Kajiado has been rescued from a forced marriage.
The girl, who is a pupil in a local primary school, was rescued by a teacher and director of an NGO working in the county.
This is after the teen ran away and went to seek refuge at the home of her former teacher.
The teacher took her in on Monday night only to discover that maggots were coming out of her private parts.
The girl told the teacher that she had been circumcised a week ago but no medication had been administered on her.
She said she was forced to go and work as a maid soon after completing her Class 8 last year.
“One week ago they called me to go home where they forced my circumcision. I was really hurt. They never gave me any medicine after cutting my private parts,” the girl told the teacher.
The teacher informed the local chief about the girl who had run away to avoid being married off.
The chief who visited the home of the teacher could not hold back his tears on seeing and talking to the girl.
“I have never seen such a thing in my life. This child is very sick and the parents want to marry her off?” the chief lamented.
According to the chief, the parents of the girl who is said to have performed well in last year’s KCPE had already received the dowry from the purported suitor.
The chief and the teacher informed Nancy Milanoi, a director for the south region at the National Council of NGOs, about the matter.
Milanoi took the girl to a hospital on Wednesday morning and found her shelter.
Milanoi said the girl had to be admitted first for comprehensive treatment.
Milanoi said she was shocked to see maggots coming out of the girl’s genitals, and immediately called for the arrest of the parents of the young girls.
“I am calling for the arrest of the child’s parents. This is inhuman in this age. How can they do this to the child?” Milanoi posed.
The director said she will monitor the situation and ensure that the culprits are brought to book.
“This girl has a future and we will find sponsors to take her to school after she has healed. I am also warning those other parents with such intentions that their days are numbered,” Milanoi said.
