The Judiciary has launched investigations into claims of courts’ capture by brokers.

According to Chief Justice Martha Koome, the brokers who operate along the corridors of justice, taking advantage of desperate litigants, are interfering with the wheels of justice.

Speaking in Mombasa during the High Court Judges Conference, Koome called on investigating agencies to arrest all imposters masquerading as agents of the courts.

“One of the recurring challenges that continues to taint the image of the Judiciary relates to the presence of brokers and impostors operating within court premises. These individuals, who position themselves as intermediaries, are giving judges and judicial officers a bad name and contributing to the negative public perception of our institution,” said Koome.

According to the Chief Justice, the brokers have literally taken over cases in the Judiciary and are using them to lure litigants into bribing them for fake judgments and case outcomes.

The apex court now wants the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission to move with speed and rescue the Judiciary from capture.

“I have engaged the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and other investigative agencies to work with us in addressing this menace – not to investigate judges, judicial officers and staff, that is the responsibility of the Judicial Service Commission. Rather, to rid us of the problem of imposters masquerading as agents of corruption within our hallowed corridors,” said Koome.
