Labour Cabinet Secretary nominee Alfred Mutua was asked to clarify his 2019 claims regarding then Deputy President (now President) William Ruto, whom he accused of “squeezing his hand” and threatening him.

During his parliamentary vetting on Sunday, Mutua faced questions about his past statements and actions, including a report he filed with the police about his alleged confrontation with Ruto at State House.

In response, Mutua explained that his earlier remarks were politically motivated, as he was part of the opposition against Ruto at the time. “Those sentiments were political; there was nothing much,” he stated.

Mutua recounted that in 2019, he met Ruto at State House, where Ruto firmly shook his hand and squeezed it while threatening to “crush” him for opposing him.

He also claimed that Ruto, along with then-Senate Majority Leader Kipchumba Murkomen and National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale, threatened him. He alleged that Murkomen and Duale warned him against opposing Ruto, stating that whenever he challenged Ruto, he was also challenging them personally.
