Kenya’s Ruth Chepngetich is set to earn millions after breaking the world record at the 2024 Chicago Marathon. Chepngetich made history by completing the race in 2:09:57, shattering the previous record of 2:11:53 set by Ethiopia’s Tigist Assefa at the Berlin Marathon in September. This remarkable feat also makes her the first woman to run a marathon in under 2 hours and 10 minutes.

Her achievement not only solidifies her place among the greatest marathoners but also brings her significant financial rewards. Chepngetich is set to receive a substantial prize from the Chicago Marathon sponsors. The marathon traditionally awards top finishers Sh12.9 million (USD 100,000), with additional bonuses for setting world records.

For her record-breaking performance, Chepngetich will earn an additional Sh6.5 million (USD 50,000) bonus, bringing her total earnings to Sh19.3 million (USD 150,000) before taxes.

Kenya’s John Korir, who excelled in the men’s race, will also receive Sh12.9 million (USD 100,000) for his victory. Chepngetich, who previously won the Chicago Marathon in 2021 and 2022 and placed second in 2023, is now ranked as the top women’s marathoner in history following her record-breaking win.
