National boxing team head coach Benjamin Musa is optimistic about sending at least three boxers to the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. Under his guidance, the Kenyan boxers currently in camp are showing good progress in terms of fitness and overall performance. The team has been undergoing training at Mathare Police Depot, Nairobi, for the past four weeks in preparation for the second leg of the World Olympic qualifiers scheduled to take place in Bangkok, Thailand, from May 24 to June 2.
“Training has been going on well and we don’t have any injuries. By the 23rd of this month we will be fully prepared for the battle ahead of us, and hopefully we will send at least three boxers to Paris. We have brought in seven coaches to help us pick the right squad. Our urge is to see our boxers qualify for the games as had been our past tradition,” said Musa.
As the boxers continue to refine their skills, Musa remains hopeful that the government will approve their request to send 12 boxers to the qualifiers in Bangkok. This decision aims to enhance their prospects of securing multiple spots for the quadrennial event in Paris. However, Musa acknowledges that the number of slots allocated by the government will ultimately determine the size of the team for the week-long trip.
”The team is supposed to send 12 boxers to Thailand – seven men and five ladies. But that will depend on the support we get from the government. We are still waiting for confirmation from the government by the end of this week to know the exact number,” added Musa.
