A Nairobi court has set August 12 as the date for the hearing in the case involving Michael Macharia Njiiri aka DJ Brownskin, who stands accused of aiding his wife in taking her own life.

Milimani Chief Magistrate Lukas Onyina announced the DJ’s pretrial appearance.

The DJ vehemently denies the allegations leveled against him, refuting claims that he helped his wife, Sharon Njeri Mwangi, take her own life on July 29, 2022.

In addition to the primary charge, DJ Brownskin is accused of failing to use all reasonable force to prevent his wife from carrying out the act, despite being aware of her intentions.

DJ Brownskin also faces an accusation of deleting evidence related to the suicide from his phone on June 1, 2023, an act he allegedly committed with the knowledge that the material would be crucial in legal proceedings.

Earlier, the DJ had sought to summon DCIO Kasarani, Jimmy Kimaru, to court for contempt. However, Magistrate Onyina denied the request, explaining that the Makadara Law Courts, which hold equal jurisdiction, had issued the court orders allegedly violated by Kimaru. Consequently, the court found no grounds for contempt in this particular case.

Defense attorney argued that his client had been coerced into confessing to the crime in order to secure his release. The prosecution attorney, however, clarified that the defense’s concerns should be addressed in the pending case at the Makadara Law Courts, as it falls under their jurisdiction.

Magistrate Onyina granted DJ Brownskin a bond of Sh200,000 or a cash bail of Sh100,000. The decision was influenced by a pre-bail report that indicated the accused was not considered a flight risk.

The case is now scheduled to be heard on August 12, where further evidence and arguments will be presented to determine the DJ’s culpability in his wife’s tragic death.
