A man has stunned the court after confessing that he is willing to accept any offer from the insurance company he defrauded of Ksh683,290.
The 29-year-old Ian Njuguna left the court in stitches when he argued that he was willing to offer his services to APA Medical Insurance as a way of atoning for his crime.
Appearing before Senior Principal Magistrate Ben Mark Ekhubi on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, Njuguna admitted that he was guilty of the offences he was charged with.
The accused had claimed reimbursement from the insurance company three times for medical expenses incurred during treatment at Baragoi Catholic Nursing Home in 2024 and 2025.
He told the court that he had previously reached an agreement with the Insurance Crime Fraud Unit that he could offer voluntary services to the company as a way to repay the money he had taken unlawfully.
“We reached an agreement initially with those in charge of the Insurance Crime Fraud Unit that I could even volunteer with them; we discussed it with the officer in charge of the investigations, and they initially agreed to it,” Njuguna told the court.
According to Njuguna, there were loopholes in the company’s system that enabled him to claim over Ksh300,000, and he stated that, given a chance, he would be able to fix them.
“Your honour, if a 29-year-old was able to go through their system and claim over Ksh300,000, then there are loopholes; there are existing loopholes. That’s the truth, your honour,” Njuguna said.
According to the charge sheet, Njuguna is said to have willfully and unlawfully presented false documents, namely a discharge summary for inpatient treatment, a receipt, and a final inpatient bill invoice purportedly issued at Baragoi Catholic Nursing Home on August 27, 2024, to APA Insurance Company head office in Nairobi.
Njuguna also presented a police abstract allegedly from Baragoi police station, claiming he had been admitted to the facility after being involved in a road accident, in support of an APA Medical Insurance reimbursement claim amounting to Ksh311,150.
The court papers further state that on or before March 23, 2025, Njuguna presented documents from the same facility indicating that he had been admitted after suffering from complicated malaria with sepsis, in support of a reimbursement claim amounting to Ksh91,490.
He was also charged with obtaining Ksh280,650 through a reimbursement claim, alleging that he had been admitted at Baragoi Catholic Nursing Home from August 23 to 27, 2024, following a road accident on August 23, 2024.
