Detectives are holding three suspects in connection with an ongoing SIM card fraud investigation.
In the first operation, detectives from the DCI Headquarters and DCI Nairobi Region apprehended a suspect believed to be the mastermind behind phone impersonation and fraudulent SIM card registrations. Acting on a tip-off, the detectives intercepted the suspect in Ruiru Membely while he was driving a Nissan Salon. A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of multiple SIM cards and mobile phones. The suspect was taken to the DCI Headquarters’ Serious Crime Unit for processing and is awaiting arraignment.
In a separate crackdown on online fraud, detectives arrested three suspects involved in a scheme where they impersonated employees of Simba Cement, tricking unsuspecting customers with promises of low-priced cement. The operation, conducted in Baruti, Nakuru County, led to the recovery of various SIM cards, a desktop computer, and six mobile phones.
Meanwhile, in Masimba, Makueni County, two men were arrested for defrauding unemployed teachers by posing as senior officials from the Ministry of Education. One of the suspects had previously been convicted of murder by the Meru High Court in 2000 and sentenced to life imprisonment, but was released in 2018 by the Court of Appeal. His accomplice had been convicted of robbery with violence in 2002 and sentenced to death, later gaining release from Kamiti Maximum Prison in 2019 after an appeal.
Six mobile phones and several SIM cards were recovered from the duo, with police confirming the phone numbers were used in their fraudulent activities. A motor vehicle was also seized. Investigations are ongoing to track down any additional accomplices, and all five suspects are set to face legal proceedings.
