The political atmosphere in Kenya has been shaken following the alleged abduction of Juja Member of Parliament, George Koimburi, who was reportedly forcefully taken by unidentified men shortly after attending a church service on Sunday.

According to eyewitness accounts and statements from Koimburi’s wife, Ann Koimburi, the MP was accosted by two men disguised as worshippers.

The men joined a crowd of well-wishers greeting the MP after the service before suddenly overpowering him and forcing him into a waiting Subaru Forester with an altered number plate—allegedly intended to obscure the vehicle’s true identity.

accounts“We had just left church, and it is normal for Mheshimiwa to greet people, but they quickly turned on him and forced him into the car,” Mrs. Koimburi said. She added that she attempted to intervene but was overpowered and injured in the ensuing scuffle.

“They started hitting me from outside, and I felt as if my arm was broken. I had no choice but to let go of my husband,” she recounted.

The two men, dressed in plain clothes, did not identify themselves during the incident

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has denied any involvement in the abduction, though it confirmed that Koimburi has been sought since Friday in connection with alleged land fraud and misuse of Constituency Development Funds (CDF).

Mrs. Koimburi expressed frustration over the situation, noting previous occasions when authorities took her husband’s phone and vehicle during investigations but failed to provide clarity on his whereabouts.

“The last time they arrested him, they took even his phone and car — we have not heard from them since. Now we are shocked because you are supposed to protect us, not cause us harm,” she said.

The incident follows political unrest witnessed a day earlier in Kakamega, where supporters of the Democratic Change Party (DCP) were dispersed by police during planned rallies. The party’s Deputy Leader, Cleophas Malala, also had his vehicle impounded for alleged dangerous driving.

DCP Party Leader Rigathi Gachagua condemned the actions, describing them as part of a systematic political persecution targeting opposition leaders. “It started with me; they assaulted me.

Then in Meru, they targeted Mithika Linturi. In Embu, Justin Muturi was attacked. Now in Murang’a, they have gone after our young leader Ndindi Nyoro,” Gachagua said. He warned that these acts are “not good” and called for accountability.

Further, Gachagua accused President William Ruto of political intolerance, urging residents of the Mt. Kenya region to rethink their engagement with government empowerment programs. “Women sit under the hot sun all day, yet they are given only 500 shillings. What kind of empowerment is that? This needs to be investigated,” he remarked.
