DCI dismisses claims linking Kitengela robbery suspect to the DP’s security team

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has dismissed claims circulating in sections of the media that one of the police officers charged in a robbery with violence case in Kitengela is attached to the Deputy President’s close protection team.

In a statement, the DCI clarified that Police Constable Samuel Gathitu Ng’ang’a, who is stationed at Elwak Police Station, was off duty at the time of the incident and has no links to the Deputy President’s office.

The clarification comes as four police officers were arraigned before the Kajiado Law Courts in connection with the robbery involving a Congolese national.

The officers — PC Lincoln Ashioya, PC Tom Odero Abwoga of Muungano Police Station, PC Samuel Gathitu Ng’ang’a of Elwak Police Station, and PC Perminus Muiruri Kamau of DCI Kitengela — are accused of jointly committing the offence alongside an accomplice identified as Erick, who remains at large.

The court granted each of the four a cash bail of KSh50,000 after declining a prosecution request to detain them for 10 days to complete investigations. They were ordered to report daily at 7:00 p.m. to the DCI office in Isinya.

According to a report filed on March 23, 2026, the complainant, Djuma Yasin Mumbele, was travelling from the Namanga Border Point to Nairobi at around 9:42 p.m. when he was approached by a man identified as Erick, who offered to help him find a buyer for his diamond necklace in Kitengela.

Upon arrival at Kitengela main stage, the complainant was directed to a motor vehicle, registration number KBK 771Z, where individuals posing as prospective buyers were waiting. After handing over the necklace for inspection, two men reportedly forced their way into the vehicle and attempted to handcuff him.

Members of the public intervened, rescued the victim, and apprehended one suspect, who was escorted to a police station alongside the complainant.

The suspects are alleged to have robbed the victim of a diamond necklace valued at USD 1,905, as well as USD 3,000, EUR 300, and KSh500. The victim sustained neck and back injuries and was treated and discharged in stable condition from Kitengela Level Four Hospital.

Authorities recovered the motor vehicle believed to have been used in the incident, which is now being held as an exhibit.
