The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has taken over probe to establish the manner in which Jeff Mwathi died after public outcry.
In a statement on Friday, March 10, DCI said the new move follows a directive from the agency boss Mohamed Amin.
“Detectives from the Homicide department based at DCI Headquarters, have this morning taken over investigations into the death of 23-year-old Jeff Mwathi, from Kasarani police station.
“This follows a directive by the Director of Criminal Investigations Mr Mohamed Amin, for the expeditious investigation into the death of the young man.
“The public is assured that no stone shall be left unturned in the investigation of this case and any person found to have been involved in the death shall face the full force of the law,” DCI said in the statement.
Mwathi’s death
Mwathi allegedly died after falling off from the popular Kikuyu benga artiste-cum DJ Fatxo’s 10th-floor apartment at Kasarani, Nairobi.
Mwathi, an interior decorator, had visited the DJ’s house to deliver some interior decor materials for his home and office.
A police statement recorded by the DJ revealed that the two had been together in four different clubs.
They started partying at Bliss Bistro and ended at Quiver’s Lounge.
According to footage released by the apartment’s management, Mwathi, and the DJ returned to the apartment at 3 am on February 22 accompanied by three unidentified women.
Later, another man believed to be a relative of the DJ arrived in a different car.
An hour later, the DJ left the apartment with the three unidentified women leaving the victim in the house with two other men
Shortly after, the two men are seen inspecting the apartment’s parking lot. Within the same period, the DJ’s cousin is seen making several phone calls before heading back inside.
Shockingly, seven minutes after Mwathi is seen falling off the building. His uncle told police that the victim was found dead with his pants pulled to his knees.
A post morterm conducted at the City Mortuary was unable to reveal if the victim had been sexually assaulted before he met his untimely death.
The two men together with the DJ told police that the deceased took away his life.
The duo claimed that they only knew of his death when the DJ returned to the apartment.
His family on the other hand brushed off the claims. His mother who works in Qatar noted that her son had asked for money to attend a meeting in Ruiru. She noted that her son has never been suicidal.
She revealed a Whatsapp audio corroborating her statement.
“Mum aki si unitumie 200 sahii DJ Fatxo amenichatisha ameniambia tumeet na sina doh, nangoja doh jioni,” Mwathi said.
“Sawa mum, acha niende, nakaa smart nitaenda kupiga picha na yeye tukipatana nitakupigia picha uone,” he added.
The family has called on the police to speed up investigations and bring justice to their son.
