Judge Arun Subramanian is poised to play a pivotal role in the high-profile trial of Sean “Diddy” Combs, which is expected to begin in earnest with opening arguments on Monday. While he now presides as a federal judge, Subramanian is remembered by former clients for his compassion and dedication during his days as a civil attorney.

Mary and Joel Rich, who were represented by Subramanian in a lawsuit against Fox News, recall him as a man of integrity and humility. The couple sued the network after it published a widely discredited story claiming their late son, Seth Rich, had leaked Democratic National Committee emails to WikiLeaks in 2016. Following the lawsuit’s settlement, the Riches invited their legal team to dinner in New York City to show their appreciation. Subramanian agreed to attend—but insisted on paying the entire bill himself. The Riches described the upscale Italian dinner as generous, noting that the gesture encapsulated the judge’s character.

“He treated us like family,” Mary Rich said, adding that she hopes to see Subramanian again so she can give him a big hug. The couple praised him as a respectable, honorable, and graceful man who always prioritized their well-being.

Subramanian has been frequently seen heading into court since jury selection began for the Diddy trial, often blending in with commuters, headphones on, showing no signs of the gravity of his role. Known among peers for his humility and grounded nature, Subramanian is also a fan of karaoke and even purchases his judicial robes online. His calm demeanor and light-hearted presence have reportedly helped to ease potential jurors during the intense early stages of the trial process.

Born in Pittsburgh to immigrant parents, Subramanian has spoken publicly about the importance of family, highlighting each member during his Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in 2022. His handling of the Diddy case, which involves charges of sex trafficking, transportation for prostitution, and racketeering, marks one of the most significant cases of his judicial career.

Attorney Arick Fudali, who is representing an anonymous government witness and two of Diddy’s accusers, said much of the trial’s shape will depend on which evidence is permitted—decisions that ultimately rest in the hands of Judge Subramanian. His rulings are expected to set the tone for a case already being described as one of the most closely watched of the year.
