Renowned entertainer DJ Brownskin born Michael Macharia Njiiri, who was captured on video watching his wife took her life by taking poison at their house in Garden estate in Kasarani, Nairobi, is under investigations for aiding suicide contrary to section 225 (c) of the penal code.

Mr Njiiri is being held by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Kasarani after detectives picked him up at a popular club in the area on Thursday.

The DJ is being investigated for committing the offence related to the death of his wife Sharon Njeri, 24, who died between the nights of July 29 and 30 last year.

Constable Wicks Lumumba of Kasarani DCI offices obtained orders at the Makadara Law Courts to hold the DJ for seven days to conclude investigations.

Mr Lumumba stated in an affidavit filed before Principal Magistrate Eric Mutunga on Friday that the deceased died by suicide with the assistance of Mr Njiiri after she took poison in an incident that was captured in a video that was shared by Mr Njiiri on his social media pages.

The detective said Mr Njiiri failed to prevent the said felony from being committed, resulting in the death of the deceased.

Mr Lumumba said Mr Njiiri had been summoned by the DCI three times to shed light on the matter but has been the police until he was arrested.

The officers said he needed time to trace the parents of the deceased and record their statements over the incident. The detective also said Mr Njiiri is a flight risk since he has been on the run since January.

He added that the investigators require time for the purpose of gathering crucial evidence which is believed to be scattered.

Mr Lumumba said the suspect is required to help in reconstructing the scene of crime and evidence gathering.

The DCI officer was seeking 14 days custodial orders but Mr Mutunga granted him only seven days. The application had been opposed by Mr Njiiri’s lawyers led by Mr Elisha Ndemo.

Mr Ndemo said Mr Njiiri is not a flight risk since he lives in Kariobangi South estate in Nairobi and police know both his residence and the workplace where they arrested him.

The lawyer denied that his client had been summoned by the police and said nothing had been tabled before the court to prove there was any summons issued to Mr Njiiri to present himself to the police.

He added that the incident happened in July last year and there is no explanation as to why police have not recorded the statements of the deceased’s parents. The case will be mentioned on June 9, 2023.
