Popular Kikuyu vernacular artist Lawrence Njuguna, alias DJ Fatxo, has been acquitted of murder charges in the death of interior designer Geoffrey ‘Jeff’ Mwathi who mysteriously died at a city estate in late February.
Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, Fatxo’s lawyer Duncan Okatch stated that after reviewing findings from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the Office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) exonerated DJ Fatxo and ordered an inquest into Mwathi’s death.
“Pursuant to extensive investigations, the DCI came up with findings and forwarded that file to the DPP. The DCI did not find an iota of culpability that links our client to the said death or that purports to say that our client has any grey area in terms of Mwathi’s death,” Okatch said.
“In fact, it is very clear that our client was not even in his house at the material time when his friend Jeff Mwathi met his death.”
The advocate went on to add that his client, Fatxo, had since made a decision to forgive all those who had connected him to Mwathi’s death.
“Nonetheless, our client, who is a practising Christian, has made a conscious decision to forgive all those who have propagated such narratives and he only hopes that through his ordeal, those who have been led to believe such narratives or who have in one way or another become part of the social mob justice, cyber bullying and Kenyans in general have learnt a thing or two,” said Okatch.
On February 22, Mwathi allegedly fell from the 10th-floor window of an apartment belonging to DJ Fatxo.
Reports indicate that Mwathi had met the entertainer hours earlier to hold discussions about an interior design gig that DJ Fatxo wanted him to undertake for a fee.
After wrapping up the business meeting, the pair went out for drinks at four different clubs in and around Nairobi.
CCTV footage from the apartments captured Mwathi, DJ Fatxo, his driver and three unidentified women returning to the premises at around 3am.
According to a police report, a relative of the DJ’s arrived at the residence some minutes later in a different vehicle.
The DJ was then captured leaving his apartment with the three women at around 4am, while Mwathi stayed behind with the two other men.
CCTV footage would a few moments later capture Mwathi falling to his death.
