Samuel Muraya, alias DJ Mo, has revealed that the late Betty Bayo was first trained as a DJ before she became known as a gospel musician.
In a podcast on Thursday, December 18, 2025, he shared that he met her long before her music career began, when she approached him with an interest in learning how to DJ.
According to Dj Mo, the encounter happened when he was still building his own career. He recalled that one day, a young woman walked into his studio space and introduced herself.

“Betty has been my friend for so long. I remember nikianza ku DJ nilikua na studio pale Anniversary Towers,” he said.
“So one day, I see this girl ameingia studio, hapo kwa DJ. Akaniambia niaje MO, I follow you, I would like to be a DJ. Imagine.”
He said the request surprised him, but he welcomed her interest.
“Nikamwambia, oh wow,” he said, explaining that she later joined his class like other students. At the time, he did not immediately know who she was.
“So nikakuja kujua she is called Betty Bayo ndio sasa,” he added.

Dj Mo explained that even then, she already used the name Betty Bayo.

“By the way, alikua anajiita Betty Bayo, hata 11th hour hakua ameimba,” he said, noting that music was not yet part of her public identity. Most of her time, he recalled, was spent learning and practising.
“So tukiwa hapo basement alikua anakuja tizi, akaanza kuiva ku DJ,” he said.
He said that many people may not know this part of her journey.
“Betty Bayo alikua DJ by the way,” DJ MO said, “Before akue musician alikua DJ, I trained her to DJ.”
This revelation comes as authorities move to investigate the circumstances surrounding her death. The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions has ordered criminal investigations into the death of gospel singer Beatrice Wairimu Mbugua, popularly known as Betty Bayo, following concerns raised by her immediate family.
In a press statement dated Thursday, December 18, 2025, the ODPP confirmed that it received a formal complaint on December 9, 2025, from an advocate acting on behalf of the late singer’s family.
