Renowned city lawyer Donald Kipkorir is celebrating the memory of the late former president of Kenya Daniel Arap Moi on Utamaduni Day.
Utamaduni Day, formerly known as Moi Day, is commemorated on October 10, each year to honour Kenya’s diverse cultural heritage.
In a statement posted on his X account, Kipkorir expressed his admiration for the late President Moi, highlighting his kindness and benevolence during his regime.
“On this Moi Day, we reminisce the good times & memories of President Daniel Arap Moi… Beyond the human fallibility that all have, President Moi had a genuine heart & beautiful soul. He never saw a person in need without help. He was a Good Samaritan,” he wrote.
Daniel Arap Moi served as the second president of Kenya for a remarkable 24-year period, spanning from 1978 to 2002.
In 2002, he gracefully retired, marking the transition of leadership to Mwai Kibaki. It is worth noting that Moi sadly passed away in 2020.
How Utamaduni Day came to be
Moi Day, which used to be a prominent national holiday in Kenya, was removed from the list of official holidays in August 2010, following the adoption of the new Constitution.
In December 2019, the Kenyan Cabinet, under the leadership of former President Uhuru Kenyatta, approved a significant change to this holiday’s name. It was renamed Huduma Day, with the intention of emphasizing the importance of public service and civic duty.
Subsequently, in 2020, the holiday’s name was once again altered, this time to Utamaduni Day, signifying a celebration of Kenya’s rich and diverse cultural heritage.
