The Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has directed the commencement of investigations into the death of singer Betty Bayo, real name BeatriceWairimu Mbugua.

In a letter to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Tuesday, DPP asked for investigations into Bayo’s death and findings forwarded to the prosecutors within 7 days.

This is after the singer’s mother Joyce Wairimu, on December 9, wrote a letter to the DPP asking for an inquest into the death of her daughter.

The gospel artist died on November 10, 2025, at the Kenyatta National Hospital, where the family said she had been receiving treatment. Then, a family spokesperson, in the company of the singer’s husband, Hiram Gitau, said she had succumbed to leukaemia.

However, Wairimu told the DPP that the family suspects an evil hand in the death of the 11th Hour hitmaker.

She alleged that Bayo had never exhibited any illness and that she died mysteriously. She also alluded to events after her death, saying the family was denied an autopsy report and that she was hurriedly buried to conceal some facts that may have led to her death.

Wairimu further alleged that the family was denied medical records and information about what the deceased was being treated for.
