A former Ugandan journalist has made history by ascending to one of the country’s most storied royal thrones. Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma was officially crowned king of the Tooro Kingdom on September 29, 2026, in a ceremony that drew enormous crowds and considerable attention across the region.
The coronation took place on an elaborately decorated outdoor stage complete with a red carpet, thrones, and royal regalia.
Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni was among the dignitaries who attended the historic event, lending it significant political weight.
Who is the new Tooro King?
Rukidi steps into the role following the death of King Oyo, who passed away at just 34 years old after a battle with cancer.
King Oyo had been one of Africa’s most recognised monarchs, having ascended to the throne as a young child and reigning for decades.
Rukidi, by contrast, comes from a journalism background rather than having been groomed for royal life from birth, a detail that has sparked considerable conversation online.
The streets surrounding the ceremony erupted in celebration, with residents lining roads and accompanying motorcades in a display of genuine excitement.
One attendee captured the mood in an interview clip included in BBC Africa’s coverage, saying:
“I want to thank God and I want to thank the Royal Family for choosing the right person. He is a very royal man, very humble, very disciplined and loving.”
