The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on Sunday that it has certified Egypt as malaria-free, marking the elimination of a disease that has plagued the country since ancient times.
The WHO grants this certification to countries that can demonstrate, beyond reasonable doubt, that the chain of indigenous malaria transmission by Anopheles mosquitoes has been interrupted for at least the previous three consecutive years.
With this certification, Egypt joins a total of 44 countries and one territory worldwide that have achieved this status, as stated in a WHO release.
