Eight relatives are currently hospitalized at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret after a tragic accident claimed the lives of six others on the Eldoret-Nakuru highway.
The incident took place on Monday evening at Mumberes along the busy highway when the matatu they were traveling in collided head-on with a lorry bound for Nakuru.
Dr. Phillip Kirwa, the hospital’s CEO, confirmed that four of the admitted individuals were in critical condition, suffering from multiple fractures and requiring surgical intervention.
According to Nicholas Rotich, Chief of the Mumberes area, the matatu was carrying mourners en route to a funeral in Kakamega County when the accident occurred, likely due to the lorry driver losing control of the vehicle.
This tragedy adds to the increasing number of road accident fatalities in the country over the past three months, prompting Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen to announce plans for new traffic regulations aimed at reducing road carnage.
