Arsenal legend, Paul Merson has urged the club not to sack manager Mikel Arteta.

Merson wants Arsenal’s hierarchy to keep Arteta at the Emirates Stadium even if the Gunners finished in second position again this season.

Arsenal have not won a major trophy since the FA Cup in 2020.

Arteta’s side came close to winning the Premier League title in the last two seasons.

They finished in second position twice behind champions Manchester City.

This season, Arsenal currently sit in second position behind leaders Liverpool. The Reds, however, have a game in hand.

Arteta’s side were recently eliminated from the Carabao Cup at the hands of Newcastle United and they only have the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League to compete for this season.

“It all depends how many points they get beaten by in the end if they [Arsenal] don’t win the league,” Merson said on Sky Sports

“If they come second again.. he [Arteta] is going to stay, I hope people don’t think, ‘Oh, let’s change the manager’.”

He added, “But he had to be there, ready to pounce when Man City dropped off and he didn’t and Liverpool have.”
