Football fans witnessed a spectacular show at Euro 2024 as host nation Germany faced Scotland in a thrilling match that featured six goals. Germany, under Julian Nagelsmann’s leadership, dominated the opening game of EURO 2024, overpowering ten-man Scotland in Munich with a 5-1 victory.
Florian Wirtz, Leverkusen’s key player in their recent Bundesliga title win, tested Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn within the first minute, though he was ruled offside from Antonio Rüdiger’s pass. Less than ten minutes later, Wirtz found the bottom corner with a first-time shot from Joshua Kimmich’s pass.
Germany, buoyed by their enthusiastic supporters, continued to pressure Scotland and doubled their lead midway through the first half. A series of precise passes ended with Kai Havertz setting up Musiala, who created space in a crowded penalty area before striking the ball into the roof of the net.
Scotland’s situation worsened just before halftime when Ryan Porteous was sent off for a foul on İlkay Gündoğan inside the area. Havertz converted the ensuing penalty kick, making it 3-0. After the break, Leroy Sané and Maximilian Mittelstädt both came close to extending Germany’s lead.
Eventually, substitute Niclas Füllkrug scored the fourth goal with a powerful strike from the edge of the box after the ball fell to him.
Rüdiger accidentally headed the ball past Manuel Neuer, giving Scotland a consolation goal. However, Emre Can sealed Germany’s victory with a low finish in added time.
The competition continues today with three matches: Hungary versus Switzerland, Spain taking on Croatia, and Italy facing Albania.
