Former Bunge La Wananchi National Coordinator Rodgers Mwololo has been slapped with a Ksh.250,000 fine or serve a two-year jail sentence over bribery charges.
Mwololo was accused of extorting a bribe from the proprietor of St. Mary’s Clinic in Umoja Estate, Nairobi County, in order to avoid exposing sexual harassment claims against the facility to the media.
Appearing before the Anti-Corruption Court in Milimani on Tuesday, the accused was convicted of bribery charges following investigations by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).
He was found guilty of two counts and slapped with the sentence by Chief Magistrate Felix Kombo.
A source at the EACC told Citizen Digital that Mwololo solicited a bribe of Ksh.250,000 in batches on two different occasions.
“Mwololo was charged that on December 3, 2018, he solicited a benefit of Ksh.150,000 and subsequently received Ksh.100,000 from Lucas Munata Sameta, with intent that, in consequence, he would forbear contacting media houses on sexual harassment complaints he had purportedly received regarding staff members working at the complainant’s clinic,” said the source.
“The complainant reported the matter to EACC which undertook investigations leading to the arrest of the official while receiving Kes.100,000 as part of the demanded bribe.”
He was hence fined Ksh.150,000 and in default to serve 12 months imprisonment on the first count, and similarly fined Ksh.100,000 and in default to serve 12 months of imprisonment for the second count.
