Socialite Vera Sidika has dismissed reports that she converted to Islam at the beginning of her relationship with musician Brown Mauzo.
Speaking to Nairobi News, the mother of two clarified that she has always been a Christian.
“I am a Christian and whoever is spreading the false allegation that I have converted should stop spreading lies. I have openly expressed my desire to return to church. The reason I haven’t attended church is because of the attention I attract as a public figure and the scrutiny I face because of my celebrity status,” she said.
In an earlier interview with Nairobi News, Mauzo opened up about his marriage to Sidika.
He revealed that they broke up in June 2023, but he officially announced the separation in August 2023.
When asked who initiated the relationship, Mauzo preferred not to focus on that aspect.
“I prefer not to go into the details of how our love story started, because I want to keep a positive perspective on her side. As long as we were doing well, that was all that mattered. At the time our relationship started, she was living in Mombasa,” he recalls.
Mauzo acknowledges Sidika’s special moments and love, including her decision “to convert to Islam to match his religious beliefs.”
“One day she called me and expressed her desire to convert to Islam, saying she wanted us to be a Muslim couple. This was a significant sacrifice she was making for the sake of our relationship and I gave in,” he said.
Mauzo claimed that Sidika converted and adopted a Muslim name, Zara.
“This gesture touched my heart deeply and I realised the sincerity behind her intention in our relationship, although I initially had reservations, suspecting it might be for publicity,” he told Nairobi News.
At the time, Mauzo said he was navigating the challenges of another relationship on the brink of divorce.
Despite the complexities, he says he decided to enter into a relationship with Sidika.
“The introduction of the religious aspect made me take our relationship seriously.”
Mauzo said the accumulation of problems broke up their relationship “with attempts to sit down and discuss our problems proving futile. We tried to save the marriage, but unfortunately, these discussions didn’t lead to a solution. At the same time, many factors contributed to the breakdown of the marriage,” he said.
