An expectant woman and her three children are feared dead after flash floods hit the Mwatate area of Taita Taveta County on Sunday night.

The floods came after heavy rains were witnessed in the surrounding hills on Sunday, which made the woman’s house to be swept away to a dam in the Teita sisal estate.

The lady was seven months pregnant and was with her two sons and daughter when the accident occurred, according to her family.

Mwatate County Commissioner Margaret Mwaniki on Monday said an operation is underway to find the bodies of the woman and two of her children after the body of her 6-year-old son was found at the shore of the dam.

Local leaders have in the meantime warned those living near River Voi and areas near dams to move to hilly areas as the rainy season poses a risk to their lives.
