Detectives have arrested a suspect believed to be behind the murder of a Mount Kenya University (MKU) student in Thika, Kiambu County.

The 25-year-old student is believed to have killed Faith Musembi, who was reportedly pregnant at the time.

The suspect was arrested in Nairobi after preliminary investigations suggested he killed his girlfriend over her alleged infidelity.

Thika police boss Lawrence Muchangi said the suspect was being held for questioning.

A post-mortem examination conducted at Thika General Kago Funeral Home revealed that Faith died from excessive bleeding as her placenta had detached.

Her lifeless body was discovered by her father, Mr Boniface Musembi, in their rented room in Pilot Estate within the Hospital Ward.

The MKU Students’ Council had called on the police to speed up the investigation.

Speaking to journalists on May 14, council secretary-general Carlos Abich said the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) should speed up investigations into the matter.

“The community and the welfare of the students desperately need answers, closure and above all justice,” Abich said.

Faith’s family had received chilling ransom demands on their own phone.

Despite meeting the initial demands, her kidnappers continued to extort money from the desperate family.

Deeply concerned by the lack of urgency from Thika West Police Station, Faith’s father rushed to the university.

“I blame the Thika police for their negligence; if they’d acted quickly, they could have saved my daughter from her killers. Her (Faith’s) mobile phone, which was used by her alleged killers, has still not been switched off,” Mr Musembi lamented.
