National 7s champions St. Joseph’s Girls Kitale, also known as ‘JOGA’, and Kenya’s runners-up, Kinale Secondary School from Kiambu County, dominated the opening matches of the Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSA) girls’ rugby 7s tournament currently underway in Mbale, Uganda.

JOGA delivered a stellar performance, securing a resounding 32-0 victory against Kenya’s third-ranked Nyagichenche Secondary School in their pool A opener. Lydia Furaha set the tone with a well-executed try, followed by another from Esther Wanyonyi. Sophie Nasimiyu extended the lead to 15-0 by halftime.

In the second half, JOGA continued their relentless pressure. Sarah Wafula added a fourth try, while Kenya Lionesses U18 prospect Linda Kagwiria pushed the lead further. Sylvia Awinja sealed the dominant 32-0 win with the final try of the match.

East Africa debutants Kinale also made a strong impression, demonstrating their strength in girls’ rugby. A brace from Sheldon, along with tries from Rose Okwemba, Milan, and Mongina, led them to a 29-7 victory over Uganda’s fourth-ranked Kijjabwemi, marking their maiden win in the regional competition.

In another match, Uganda’s national finalists Nkoma faced off against Jinja, with Nkoma emerging victorious with a 12-5 win. Kenya’s third-ranked St. Theresa Girls will take on Uganda’s third-ranked PMM in an upcoming match.
