Businesswoman Yvonne Mugure and her business partner, Christine Nyambura Muturi, have initiated legal proceedings against prominent blogger Edgar Obare.

Mugure is the niece to former Kiambu governor Ferdinand Waititu.

In court documents seen by Nairobi News the lawsuit alleges that Obare published defamatory articles about them online, prompting the aggrieved parties to seek legal redress.

The case, filed at Milimani Law Courts on January 29, 2024, has been expedited as an urgent matter.

The court documents include a plea for a temporary injunction against Obare, restraining him from further publishing and extracting defamatory posts on his X account under the username @edgarobare.

The court papers specifically mention the accusation that Christine Lewis is a convicted investor fraudster as one of the defamatory claims.

Their lawyer, Mwenda Njagi, addressed the media in a press conference, refuting allegations that the two businesswomen are bankrupt. Njagi clarified:

“First and foremost, the accusation itself is flawed. Chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Code is a provision primarily designed for corporate reorganisation. It does not apply to an individual, and the proprietor of Westwick college definitely did not file in her personal capacity and has never filed bankruptcy.”

Njagi emphasized Christine Lewis’ impressive track record in the business world since the age of 18, highlighting her involvement in various successful ventures, including pharmaceutical companies, group homes for the elderly, and hospice agencies across the United States.

The legal dispute stems from Obare’s online posts on January 27, where he accused Mugure and Lewis of being fraudsters. The specific claim made by Obare was:

“Meet Yvonne Mugure’s ‘Billionaire’ mentor Christine Lewis, who is a convicted investor fraudster, who relocated to Kenya. She has been sanitizing her image ever since and opening businesses in Kenya.”

The court has set a subsequent hearing for the case on February 19, 2024.

Until then, Obare has been issued an order to refrain from making any further defamatory allegations about Mugure, Christine, and their business, Westwick College.
