Property of unknown value has been destroyed at the University of Kabianga in Belgut, Kericho County after an inferno burnt down one of the hostels.

According to a lecturer who spoke to Citizen Digital on condition of anonymity, the cause of the fire could not be immediately established.

However it is suspected that the inferno was caused by an electric fault.

The lecturer said the fire began on the fourth floor of Hostel Six, razing down students property.

The incident happened the same day when the university was being reopened after being temporarily closed two weeks ago after students went on a rampage over delayed HELB loan disbursement and planned fee hike by the government.

Fire brigade from the County Government of Kericho and James Finlays Tea Company are currently at the scene to put out the inferno.

No casualties have been reported so far.
