There was panic on March 11, 2024, after a fire reportedly broke out at the Lang’ata Women’s Prison in Nairobi.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
The Kenya Red Cross Society via X said its first responders and the county fire department managed to extinguish the fire.
“Seven staff quarters have been affected,” it said, adding “Assessments are underway to evaluate the extent of the damage and plan recovery support”.
The incident comes less than a day after a fire broke out at the Nacico Co. Chambers Building along Moi Avenue in Nairobi.
According to reports, the fire started at one of the shops in the building situated near Imenti House.
Police arrived at the scene and extinguished the fire, the incident forced businesses close to the building to shut down.
In 2015, a fire at the prison destroyed the houses of more than 20 warders, with reports indicating that it started after a warder forgot to disconnect an iron.
Two other fires have taken place in Nairobi over the last few weeks, one in Embakasi East’s Mradi area in February, when an explosion at a gas plant left at least 7 dead and nearly 350 wounded.
In January 2024, a huge fire destroyed a large part of the Jua Kali market along Landhies Road.
