Five suspects have been charged with the murder of Kasipul MP Charles Ongond’o Were, following a successful move by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to consolidate two separate cases previously filed in the Kibera and Milimani Law Courts.

Lady Justice Diana Kavedza approved the consolidation, enabling the prosecution to proceed with a single case against all five suspects: William Imoli Shigali, alias Imo; Edwin Odour Odhiambo, alias Machuani; Ebel Ochieng, alias Dave Calo; Isaac Kuria Chege, alias Kush; and Allan Omondi Ogola.

The suspects are accused of fatally shooting MP Were on April 30, 2025, at around 7:40 p.m., near the City Mortuary Roundabout along Ngong Road, Kilimani, Nairobi County.

Prior to the consolidation, Shigali, Odour, and Ochieng had denied the murder charges at the Kibera High Court, while Kuria and Omondi entered similar pleas at the Milimani Law Courts.

Justice Kavedza set bond rulings for the first three suspects on August 14, 2025, with the remaining two expected to have their bail application heard on September 22, 2025.

A post-mortem conducted by government pathologist Dr. Oduor at Lee Funeral Home revealed that the legislator died from extensive internal injuries caused by five gunshot wounds that penetrated vital organs. “The nature and extent of the injuries made survival impossible,” Dr. Oduor told reporters.

The examination was witnessed by the MP’s family lawyers, Apollo Mboya and Peter Kopere, alongside senior homicide detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), led by the Head of Homicide, Martin Nyuguto.

Preliminary DCI investigations suggest that the attack was premeditated. CCTV footage, mobile phone triangulation, and witness testimonies indicate that Hon. Were was trailed from Parliament by a car and a motorcycle before being ambushed.

Police operations over the past week have led to multiple arrests and the recovery of critical evidence. DCI officers seized live ammunition, spent cartridges, and two vehicles believed to have been used in the crime.

During a raid on the first suspect’s home, USD 4,800 was recovered, while the second suspect’s residence yielded nine live rounds of ammunition of an unverified calibre and eight undocumented teargas canisters.

The seized vehicles are now undergoing forensic analysis, including DNA testing.
