A former security guard at the Papino Apartment, George Gitau Mwangi, has told the court that he did not see the suspect in the murder of socialite Starlet Wahu when he walked out of the apartment.
According to Gitau, he came to know of someone who had walked out of the apartment after being notified by his fellow security guard, who was working in the opposite apartment and whom they were deployed to their respective workplaces by the same company.
Wednesday, October 1, 2025, Gitau told the court that when the accused person walked out of the apartment, he had gone to check if the water tanks he was pumping water to at the rooftop were already full.
“When I came from the rooftop, I received a call from my colleague, then Joseph Ndung’u, who asked me if I had seen someone who just walked out of the Papino Apartment with a white towel wrapped around his neck,” Gitau told the court.
Earlier Joseph Ndung’u, the caretaker of Solace Park Apartments, where Starlet Wahu tragically lost her life, testified in court, recounting how he saw a man, believed to be John Matara, the primary suspect in the murder, leaving the scene on the fateful night.
Gitau said he had not seen anyone, but they can go and check the CCTV footage from the Papino Apartment CCTV house.
After checking the footage, he said they saw a man who had been described by his colleague and decided to go check where he came from.
They discovered blood spots, followed them and took them to house Y32 on the fourth floor.
However, they found the door of the house locked from inside with a padlock, and Gitau told Ndung’u he would now have to call the owner of the house.
When she came over, she handed Gitau a key, and upon accessing the house, she found a naked woman and saw some blood coming from the bedroom.
“She came, and I opened the house and found a woman who was naked near the door, but there was blood that was coming from the other room to the sitting room,” Gitau told the court.
Watch how the person of interest in Starlet Wahu’s killing lured and tortured girls.
Further, he stated that the woman had some injuries on her neck.
Immediately, he informed the owner and advised her to report to the police what had happened.
Socialite Starlet Wahu was murdered on January 3, 2024, at a short-stay house in Papino Apartment.
The hearing of the matter proceeds on Thursday, October 2, 2025, with three more witnesses expected to testify.
