Former President Uhuru Kenyatta and Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition party leader Raila Odinga have mourned Mukami Kimathi, widow of freedom fighter Dedan Kimathi, who died while receiving treatment at a Nairobi hospital on Thursday night.

Uhuru, in his condolence message, mourned Mukami as a Mau Mau heroine and an enduring symbol of Kenya’s liberation struggle who continuously demonstrated the true spirit of patriotism and loyalty.

“Throughout her life, Mama Mukami demonstrated what genuine patriotism means and how citizens are supposed to work towards the progress of their motherland,” he said.

“Indeed as a true patriot, she never failed to play her role as a mentor and a leader worthy emulating.”

The former Head of State pointed out that despite her health challenges in the recent past, Mukami stood steadfastly not only for the welfare of her family but of the country as she continued to encourage those she interacted with to continue working for the good of the nation.

“Despite the health challenges which she experienced in her old age, Mama Mukami was always eager to support all leaders in finding tangible solutions to challenges facing the country,” stated Uhuru.

“For those of us who had the privilege of interacting with her, we will forever cherish the moments we shared and thank God for having given us the opportunity to associate with such a great warrior.”

Mr. Odinga, on his part, commended Mukami for bringing her household together following the demise of her late husband, Dedan Kimathi.

The former Prime Minister went ahead to opine that the Kenyan government should step in to ensure that she gets a proper send-off, further adding that the family she leaves behind should also be well catered to following her sacrifices.

“Her passing closes a chapter she came to personify, the reality that freedom has a price and the nation we have today came out of sacrifices that left permanent pain and suffering in some families like that of Dedan Kimathi, her late husband,” said the Azimio boss.

“I will always salute and honour Mukami for the fortitude with which she picked up the pieces, holding her family together, seeking the truth about her husband and continuing to remind Kenyans of the virtues of patriotism, courage and unity.”
