A man reported to have defrauded a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officer of Sh160,000 while falsely pretending he was in a position to secure her employment with the National Intelligence Service (NIS) has been charged at the Makadara Law Courts.

Paul Ouma is accused of defrauding Nasimiyu Nyongesa of the cash on October 12, 2023, at Muthaiga, in Nairobi, in contravention of section 313 of the Penal Code.

The suspect allegedly conned Ms Nyongesa falsely claiming he could assist her secure employment with the civilian spy agency.

The complainant met the suspect through a friend and Mr Ouma allegedly told her that there were vacancies at the NIS which she qualified for.

Ouma allegedly explained to Ms Nyongesa that she needed to send him the money which was the facilitation fee for her recruitment into NIS.

Ms Nyongesa sent the money to Mr Ouma via M-Pesa hoping to secure the job but the accused person began taking her in circles after allegedly receiving the cash.

He later blocked her calls on October 25, 2023, but she traced her to Utalii Hotel in Nairobi where she called officers at Muthaiga police station to arrest the suspect.

Ouma allegedly confessed to the police to have defrauded Ms Nyongesa after he was picked up but denied the charges when he was arraigned in court.

He denied the charges before Principal Magistrate Caroline Mugo and sought for lenient bail and bond terms through his advocate Veinna Mongare.

Ms Mongare told the court that her client is a businessman in Nairobi with a fixed abode within the jurisdiction of the court and is therefore not a flight risk.

Ms Mugo released the suspect on a bond of Sh80,000 and an alternative cash bail of Sh50,000.

The case will be mentioned on January 29, 2023, before the hearing starts on April 29, 2024.
