From courtroom to LSK President: The journey of Senior Counsel Charles Kanjama

Senior Counsel Charles Kanjama has risen to the epitome of the country’s legal sector following his election as the President of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), a distinct achievement for the advocate with over two decades of experience.

The former chairman of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), Nairobi Branch now becomes the 52nd LSK president after garnering 3,728 votes, trouncing his opponents Peter Wanyama, who received 2,616 votes and current LSK Vice President Mwaura Kabata who finished third with 2,086 votes.

Kanjama is a distinguished advocate with decades of experience across litigation, corporate governance, legal education and public policy.

Education

Kanjama attained his Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the University of Nairobi in 2001 and earned a Postgraduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law, which facilitated his admission to the bar in June 2003.

In 2005. Kanjama was certified by the Kenya Accountants and Secretaries National Examinations Board (KASNEB) and became a Certified Public Secretary – essential for ensuring legal compliance, upholding high standards of governance, and managing board-level administration.

Notable Accomplishments

From 2003, SC Kanjama has built a large portfolio of corporate clients, including state corporations and banks. He has also handled Supreme Court hearings, Constitutional briefs, election petitions and procurement cases.

In 2006, he set up a private practice, Muma & Kanjama Advocates, where he serves as a Managing Partner.

Kanjama also became the inaugural elected Chairman of the LSK Nairobi Branch, and was re-elected for a second term.

In 2022, he was formally admitted to the Senior Counsel Bar – the highest designation for advocates, symbolising exceptional expertise, integrity, and a distinguished career worthy of national honour.

Kanjama previously served as a National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) Board member, chairing the Technical Committee between 2013 and 2015.

He also served as the chair and vice chair of the Kenya Christian Professionals Forum between 2011 to 2023.

The Senior Counsel serves as a Trust Administrator/ Secretary on the Strathmore Educational Trust, where he oversees administrative and corporate secretarial functions for the Trust, which sponsors Strathmore University.
