Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has urged Kenyans to embrace courage, integrity, and accountability as the country celebrates Mashujaa Day.
In a brief post on X on Monday, October 20, 2025, Gachagua emphasised that true heroism goes beyond historical feats, extending to standing firm for justice and good governance in contemporary society.
Gachagua highlighted the importance of resilience in leadership and civic responsibility, noting that the values celebrated on Mashujaa Day remain relevant to both current and future generations.
“This day is not just about remembering past heroes, but also about honouring those who today champion truth and justice, even when it is difficult or unpopular,” he stated.

Mashujaa Day celebrations officially kicked off at Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui County with the arrival of President William Ruto, who received a guard of honour from the Kenya Defence Forces.
The stadium, filled to capacity, welcomed dignitaries, including Senegalese President Bassirou Diakhar Faye, with performances, parades, and other national celebrations underway.
This year’s Mashujaa Day comes amid a seven-day national mourning period following the passing of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who is expected to take centre stage in tributes throughout the day.

Observed annually on October 20 under the Public Holidays Act, Mashujaa Day recognises Kenyans who have demonstrated exceptional courage, service, and dedication to the country.
It blends patriotic celebration, cultural displays, and the recognition of national heroes, with this year’s event set to honour 180 Kenyans nominated across categories, including entrepreneurship, human rights, philanthropy, and the creative economy.
This marks the first time the national event has been held in Kitui, drawing thousands of Kenyans eager to celebrate the country’s heroes.
