Gachagua cautions Mount Kenya leaders against unquestioning allegiance.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has warned leaders from Mt Kenya to exercise caution when following directives from leaders of other regions.

In a TikTok video that recently surfaced, Gachagua advised them “not to be stupid.” To illustrate his point, he referenced the fable of the rabbit and the hyena, recounting how the rabbit deceived the hyena into killing his own wife.

He explained how the rabbit suggested they should kill their wives and then pretended to strike a drum, making it sound as though he was killing his own wife. When the hyena’s wife died, he visited the rabbit, only to find him happily served tea by his very much alive wife.

Gachagua emphasized that while it’s acceptable for leaders from different political backgrounds to join the Cabinet, Kenya is a vast country that belongs to all its citizens. He expressed that he remains vigilant to ensure that the Mt Kenya region is not at a disadvantage.

He remarked that while some may perceive him as foolish, he is far from it. “I sleep with one eye open,” he added, indicating his commitment to protecting the interests of his region. He asserted that there will come a time when he will speak and people will listen.

Gachagua urged elected leaders from Mt Kenya to prioritize the needs of their constituents, reminding them to always remember those who voted for them.

His position has become precarious following his impeachment by the National Assembly on Tuesday, October 8, where 281 MPs voted in favor, 44 against, and only one abstained. Gachagua faced 11 charges, including gross violation of the Constitution, bullying officials from the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (Kemsa), and ethnic discrimination.

As the first Kenyan deputy president to be impeached by the National Assembly, Gachagua’s fate now lies in the hands of the Senate, which will deliberate on his ousting on Wednesday and Thursday. To avoid being removed from office, he will need to secure 23 votes from the Senate. Should any members be absent or abstain from voting, it could work in the DP’s favor.
