Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has come to the defence of embattled nominated MP Sabina Chege.

This follows the chaos that erupted in the National Assembly on Thursday, June 7, 2023, leaving the Jubilee legislator and the current Minority Whip injured. The chaos erupted after the National Assembly Speaker refused to effect her removal from the position of the Minority Whip as proposed by the opposition outfit Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition party.

Speaking in Meru, Gachagua termed the orchestrators of the chaos in the August House as cowards perpetrating violence against women.

“Why did you beat Sabina Chege? We stopped beating women, even those whose dowry we’ve paid, we don’t fight them. When you fight women physically, what kind of a man are you?” Gachagua posed.

“When you beat a woman and you are a man, it is very embarrassing. These are cowards. How do you go to fight women physically to sort out issues that are there?”

MPs suspended over Chege saga

Following the chaos that saw Chege allegedly hit with a bottle, Wetangula was forced to suspend seven MPs for periods ranging from two sittings to two weeks.

MPs Millie Odhiambo, Rosa Buyu, Sabina Chege and TJ Kajwang were suspended from the House for two weeks, while Fatuma Muyanzi and Catherine Omanyo were ordered to stay out for five days, and Joyce Kamene for two sittings

“You should fight with Sabina politically. She says she is a party leader and the other one says he is a party leader. Why don’t you divide yourselves to know who is the party leader? When you sent for her to be beaten, does that make you a party leader?” Gachagua said.

Chege, alongside Kanini Kega, has been fighting to wrestle power from retired President Uhuru Kenyatta as the Jubilee party leader. The two have shifted their allegiance from Azimio and joined the government side.
