Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has clarified that his recent apology to President William Ruto should not be construed as an admission of guilt. Gachagua, who apologized to the President and Members of Parliament on Sunday, explained that his intention was never to disappoint anyone. In his address to the nation on Monday, he reiterated that the apology was meant to address any unintentional actions that may have upset the President.
“I want to clarify that my apology to President William Ruto did not in any way imply that I am guilty of these charges. I’m not, this I’m not. My statement was that if there is anything that I have done to the President that I don’t know and has probably upset him, I ask for his forgiveness,” Gachagua said. He emphasized that the apology was not an admission of the allegations against him, which he described as “ridiculous” and aimed at undermining the will of the people.
Gachagua also expressed confidence that the grounds for his impeachment do not meet the required legal threshold, promising to present evidence to Parliament to clear his name. He further pointed out that attempting to overturn the will of the people through impeachment would violate the Constitution.
During his Sunday address, Gachagua also extended his apology to President Ruto, asking for forgiveness in case his actions or those of his spouse, Pastor Dorcas Gachagua, had caused any offense. “To my brother President William Ruto, if in our zeal and commitment to work I have wronged you, please find it in your heart to forgive me. If my spouse Pastor Dorcas, in her duties for the boy child, has wronged you in any way, find it in your heart to forgive her,” Gachagua said.
He also sought forgiveness from Members of Parliament, in case any of his remarks or actions had upset them. “To our members of Parliament, if in the course of duty, through our utterances and actions, we have in one way or another upset you, or wronged you, find it in your heart to forgive me,” he added.
The National Assembly is expected to debate and vote on the impeachment motion against the Deputy President on Tuesday. The motion was filed by Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse.
